We are often told to just be ourselves in many situations and we love the people who we can be ourselves around. In this clip from The Real, Taye Diggs joins the ladies in answering the question whether you should completely be yourself on a first date.
Let’s be real, our first instinct is to put our best foot forward lest we be judged and also because we are hoping that the date will like you, but sometimes ‘being yourself’ and showing your true colours could mean exposing your bad habits too.
I was once on a date with a guy and put my phone face down on the table because I was a serious texter at the time and had taken a vow to try and minimize that when I am with people. After a while he told me to get my phone because all the vibrating started becoming more and more difficult to ignore. I wondered why he was not annoyed and it turned out that he was a serial texter too but had his phone on silent for the date.
While this incident turned out to reveal that we actually had something in common we could connect over, I am not so sure if I would want my less favourable habits exposed during a first date. I like what Adrienne says about just being yourself on your best behaviour.

I believe you should be yourself on the first date, don't sell people a dream. Creating expectations you won't be able to manage. I show you who I am from the get go, if you like that then you'll stick around. If not, it will save both of us the trouble to "wasting" our time
In all situations you need to be yourself, this way you remain true to yourself and you never have to be anyone else. The other person will know and understand you the way you are.
