Our Favourite Moments From Anele's #RealTalk Interview With Rebecca Malope

We are loving Real Talk with Anele on SABC 3. After Noeleen bowed out of the slot a while ago, we wondered who would fill her shoes. Anele’s show is a perfect fit as she brings her bubbly personality and personal anecdotes to the show while allowing her guests to also tell their stories.

She had reigning gospel queen, Rebecca Malope on the show the other day and these were some of the best moments from the interview.

We get to see a different side to her personality…

We are all familiar with sis Ribs’ bubbly personality. She does not hold back and laughs wholeheartedly on Gospel Time and Clash of the Choirs. It was a lovely surprise to learn that she battled with anger from her abuse-filled childhood, so much so that she used to get physical with anyone who she thought she needed protection from. Over the years she has had to train herself to manage the anger, after her mentor Sizwe Zako told her that she needed to change to suit her gospel image. This quality makes her more relatable and makes us love her even more.

She speaks about her love life…

We have heard many rumours about Rebecca’s love life. We have heard that she is a lesbian, some have linked her up with the late Vuyo Mokoena and we have heard of the men who left her. In the interview, she talks about how growing up without a positive representation of what love is has resulted in her having trust issues when it comes to relationships. She also speaks about her fiancé and speaks about her views on marriage, which are very surprising considering that she is a woman of God.

She speaks about being a doctor…

Rebecca holds two honorary doctorates from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of California. Both of these are in honour of her contributions in the music industry as well as her philanthropic work. She speaks about how she thought they were making a mistake the first time she was contacted and informed that she would be receiving an honorary doctorate as she is not educated.

Other notable moments in the interview include her almost taking over the show from Anele, talking about the party Nelson Mandela threw for her, getting R10 from Brenda Fassie, reconnecting with her estranged parents after becoming famous, all the parody accounts on social media and why she will never open her own church.

Tickets to Rebecca’s autobiographical musical, Angingedwa: My Story, opens at Carnival City on Saturday, 3 December 2016. Tickets are available at Computicket from R200.
